Buâs LessonâPursue that which makes you happy, chase until you have run out of puff and no more. Satisfaction is in the pursuit itself and is fleetingâ¦if you catch the object of your desireâwhat then?
Chapter Seventeen
Itâs My Bed!
Bu thought the spare room bed was his property and no matter where I lived and what room it was put in, it was his bed. Guests were not welcome, and he made sure everyone knew it. He behaved exactly like he would when someone dared try taking a marrowbone, a rotting rabbit head or anything else away from him that he did not wish to part with (cue un-Zen like sounds of growl, snarl, growl).
My aunt and cousin, both dog lovers, came to stay at my house once from where they lived in Melbourne, Victoria in the Eastern state of Australia. At bedtime, the cute Bu who had been laying on the couch having his tummy tickled and ears rubbed, would turn back into Bomber the refuge savage.
Bu would not get off the spare bed, where he would usually spend his days and sometimes nights with me when I needed a quiet space to finish my sleep. He did not want to give that bed up. He growled and snarled convincing my aunt as she tried to get into bed that his teeth were sharp as razor blades and his claws ready to gouge flesh! He let her know in no uncertain terms that this was his territory. My aunt called to my cousin, who was met with this similar reaction when trying to manhandle him off the bed, he tried to bite after the growling and snarling routine did not get him anywhere.
I was called in to help and the furry love of my life suddenly turned reasonable and loving. Bu wagged his stumpy tail, âthump, thump-thumpâ, immediately hopped down off the bed and looked backwards to give a long loud sigh that seemed to say, âYou really just had to ask!â
It was not the first time he had bailed someone up in the same circumstances; he pulled the same tactics on Justinâs sister, Annabelle, in the house I had in the Perth Hills. I have the suspicion, now that I am writing about these episodes, that he actually enjoyed lying in wait to surprise and terrify the unsuspecting. Heâd lull them into a false sense of security, having played the adorable puppy act on the couch before retiring time for a couple of hours. As they were brushing their teeth, he would go and wait in the dark, curled up exactly in the middle of bed. He would look up, sleepy and innocent, so I was told, and the moment they tried to get under the covers, off he would go. Frightening indeed he was, especially if you knew he was known to bite and could demolish toys made for tigers in under five minutes.
He even tried it with me once, I was surprised and yelled really quite loudly, threatening
